About the Author

Sarah (McCormick) Seekatz


A Coachella Valley Native, Sarah Seekatz holds a PhD in history from the University of California, Riverside. Her work explores the date industry of the Coachella Valley and the “Arabian” fantasies developed in the region, based on the crop’s Middle Eastern origins and the desert setting. Her research has been supported by fellowships from the Autry, The Huntington Library, and the UC California Studies Consortium and her work has been featured on CNN, NPR, Al Jazeera America, KCET.org, the Autry Blogs, and KQED’s The California Report. Dr. Seekatz currently works as an Associate Adjunct Professor at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California.

  1. My dad, Earl Asker, was the Riverside County Agricultural Inspector in Indio for years. When he retired he was the Date Commissioner for a few more years.
